Switzerland’s energy system is in the midst of a fundamental transformation. The expansion of renewable energy, the nuclear phase-out, and the electrification of transport, buildings, and industry — alongside upcoming agreements with Europe — are reshaping the national energy landscape. This transition is creating a more decentralized system with greater variability, bringing both opportunities and challenges.
Sector coupling — the intelligent integration of electricity, heat, and mobility — is emerging as a key strategy to make the energy transition both cost-efficient and future-proof. It increases system flexibility, reduces the need for unnecessary infrastructure investments, and facilitates integration with the European energy market. However, regulatory frameworks have not yet kept pace with these market-driven developments.
In recent months, energie-cluster, OE-EN Group, and selected partners have been finalising a comprehensive whitepaper on sector coupling in Switzerland. The publication, now nearing completion, will be officially launched on 26 September 2025 during a dedicated press conference and presentation event. It will present real-world examples, identify regulatory gaps, and outline strategic recommendations for large-scale implementation.
The initiative’s long-term goal is to establish a sustained dialogue among key stakeholders — spanning research, education, and business — built on practical case studies, solution-oriented proposals, and actionable recommendations.
Achieving the full potential of sector coupling will require political commitment, regulatory test environments, and coordinated investments. Only through shared responsibility and cross-sector collaboration can Switzerland ensure a secure, flexible, and climate-resilient energy future.
